024 Retro 90s School Girl

Sometimes cosplay isn’t about becoming a specific character. It’s about capturing a vibe.
This look was inspired by a blend of 90s nostalgia, pulling from two very different but equally iconic aesthetics:

  • The dark, moody tone of The Craft
  • The polished, preppy style of Clueless

The result was a casual, wearable outfit that still felt like it belonged in a 90s film.

The Concept

I wanted something that:

  • Felt like a high school character from the 90s
  • Was comfortable to wear all day
  • And could realistically double as everyday fashion

This wasn’t about accuracy; it was about atmosphere and familiarity.

The Look

Core Pieces

  • Plaid schoolgirl-style outfit (purchased online)
  • Layered undershirt
  • A very common styling choice in the 80s and 90s
  • Semi-sheer black tights
  • Classic loafers

The loafers were:

  • Comfortable
  • Easy to walk in all day
  • And a perfect match for the schoolgirl aesthetic

The Leather Jacket (Standout Piece)

One of the most important elements of this outfit was my Wilson’s leather jacket.

  • Owned since I was 16 years old
  • Originally around $350
  • Still in great condition

This piece alone says a lot about quality, especially compared to fast-fashion alternatives. While many faux leather jackets wear down over time, this one has lasted for years and continues to hold up.

It added:

  • A slightly edgy, grounded feel
  • And tied the whole look together

Accessories

  • Cross necklace: Added a subtle gothic edge
  • Small backpack: Practical and fitting for the “student” vibe

Overall Aesthetic

In my head, this outfit landed somewhere between:

  • A goth-leaning character from The Craft
  • A polished student from Clueless

That mix gave it a really unique feel:

  • Familiar
  • Recognizable
  • But not tied to just one reference

Convention Experience

While walking around the convention, someone pointed it out directly, “Oh, a 90s schoolgirl outfit.” Which meant I hit exactly what I was going for.

It read clearly as:

  • A high school-inspired look
  • Rooted in that mid-90s aesthetic

Comfort & Wearability

This is one of those rare cosplays that is:

  • Extremely comfortable
  • Easy to move in
  • And adaptable to everyday wear

It didn’t feel like a costume. It felt like an outfit.

Current Condition

  • Jacket: still in excellent condition
  • Main outfit pieces: stored and reusable
  • Loafers: still a favorite and highly recommended
  • Tights: replaced over time (as expected)

Final Thoughts

This cosplay is a great reminder that: Not everything has to be elaborate to be effective

Sometimes:

  • A strong aesthetic
  • Thoughtful layering
  • And quality staple pieces

are all you need to create something memorable.
