This was one of those conventions where I went with a very specific goal in mind… I was going for Elvira.
She is one of those characters that leaves a lasting impression. Between her humor, her presence, and the way she carries herself, there is something very captivating about her. She has that signature mix of confidence, wit, and theatrical charm that makes her instantly recognizable. There is also something timeless about her. She is spooky, but still glamorous. Playful, but still composed. It is a balance that is not easy to replicate, which is part of what makes her so iconic.
The Inspiration
What drew me to Elvira was not just the look, but the attitude. She has a way of owning every space she walks into. Her humor is quick, her energy is bold, and she never seems shaken. That kind of presence is something that naturally translates well into cosplay. Even just the name “Elvira” carries a certain dramatic elegance to it.
Approach to the Cosplay
For this event, I made a conscious decision to keep things more relaxed. Instead of going fully screen-accurate, I focused on capturing the essence of the character while still feeling comfortable and confident throughout the day. This meant:
- Wearing a simplified version of the outfit
- Skipping the wig
- Keeping the overall look more wearable
Sometimes that balance is important, especially when you have a full day planned at a convention.
The Dress
The dress itself was sourced from Amazon. It was very much in the category of a costume piece rather than a full cosplay build. It had the general silhouette and included a small dagger accessory at the belt, which added a nice touch. However, it did have some limitations:
- The fit was slightly loose
- The material leaned more toward costume quality
- The front slit was not as dramatic as the original design
Even with those details, it still worked well for the overall look I was going for.
Comfort vs Accuracy
One of the biggest decisions I made was not wearing a wig. At the time, my hair was very long and wearing a wig over that can get extremely warm. It creates a lot of insulation, and even with proper techniques, it can become uncomfortable quickly. This was one of the moments where I started realizing why some cosplayers choose shorter hairstyles. It makes wearing wigs much more manageable. For this event, I prioritized comfort, and it allowed me to enjoy the experience much more.
Convention Experience
This took place at Connecticut Horror Con, and overall, it was a really fun event. There were a lot of great costumes and a strong sense of community throughout the space. It is always interesting to see how different people interpret characters and bring their own creativity into it. One standout moment was seeing a group dressed as characters from Killer Klowns from Outer Space. They were incredibly detailed and fully committed to the look.
Beetlejuice Cosplayer
Another highlight was meeting a Beetlejuice cosplayer who truly stood out. Her outfit was thoughtfully put together, from the wig to the makeup palette she carried. She even had a tutu layered with tulle that lit up, which added such a unique detail to the overall look. She did not win the contest, but she absolutely deserved recognition. Sometimes the most memorable costumes are not the ones that take the prize, but the ones that leave a lasting impression.
Plexiglass Photo Moment
At the time, the convention used plexiglass barriers for celebrity photos. Instead of seeing it as a limitation, I decided to work with it creatively. I had the idea to do a heart pose with Elvira through the barrier. The photographer helped guide the moment by adjusting hand placement so the shape would come together properly. It ended up being a really sweet and memorable photo.
Why Simpler Worked
Not everyone recognized the cosplay immediately, and that is okay. Some people saw it as just a black dress, while others instantly understood the reference. That is one of the interesting things about cosplay, you can choose how subtle or detailed you want to be. This version leaned more toward subtle, and it still worked for the experience.
Future Improvements
This is definitely a cosplay I would revisit and upgrade. If I do, I would:
- Add a styled wig
- Enhance the makeup to match her signature look
- Tailor the dress for a better fit
- Improve the dagger detail, possibly using chrome-style materials
- Adjust the front slit for a more accurate silhouette
These changes would bring it closer to a full cosplay while still keeping the original concept intact.
Current Condition
The costume is currently in storage. It is still wearable as is, but it also serves as a base for a potential upgraded version in the future.
Final Thoughts
This was a great example of how cosplay does not always need to be perfect to be meaningful. Sometimes it is about the experience, the people you meet, and the moments you create along the way. Elvira is a character I would absolutely return to, and next time, I may take it a step further while still keeping that same sense of fun and confidence that made this version so enjoyable.
