Not every cosplay needs to be complex to be meaningful. Sometimes casual and simplicity is exactly what you need.
This was the one cosplay I intentionally planned ahead of time during a period when I had a lot going on personally. I wasn’t aiming to compete. I wasn’t aiming to build something elaborate. I just wanted something that felt:
- Manageable
- Comfortable
- And still connected to a character I enjoyed
And that’s how this casual / sporty Lord Frieza look came together.
The Concept
Instead of creating a full character build, I leaned into a more relaxed approach:
Athletic wear + character theme. It’s not quite full cosplay, but it’s also not just everyday clothing either. It sits somewhere in between:
- Casual cosplay
- Fan-inspired styling
- And functional clothing you can reuse later
And honestly, this is one of the most practical approaches when:
- You’re low on time
- Low on energy
- Or just not in the right headspace for a full build
The Outfit
The base of this look came from a simple find: A sports bra and shorts set from Target in a shade that worked well with Frieza’s color palette. From there, I built around it.
The Shirt (Customized Piece)
I found a shirt online that featured:
- Lord Frieza
- The phrase: “This isn’t even my final form”
- A graphic styled like a dumbbell
It was a fun concept but the color didn’t quite match. The purple tone was slightly off compared to the set I bought. So I decided to customize it.
Color Matching Technique (DIY Process)
This is actually a technique I’ve used before. In the past, I had:
- Chili pepper leggings
- A Red Hot Chili Peppers shirt
I painted the logo to match the exact red shade in the leggings, and it became one of my favorite outfits. So I applied that same idea here.
Step-by-Step Setup
To repaint the shirt, I:
1. Matched the Paint
- Found a purple paint that closely matched the athletic set
2. Prepared the Shirt
- Inserted cardboard inside the shirt
- This prevents paint from bleeding through
3. Added a Barrier Layer
- Placed parchment paper or aluminum foil between the shirt and cardboard
- This prevents sticking
4. Secured Everything
- Used binder clips to hold the shirt in place
- Kept the fabric taut and stable while painting
NOTE This setup creates a controlled surface that:
- Prevents shifting
- Protects the fabric
- And helps with clean application
Painting Process
I carefully painted over the existing purple areas to better match the set. While doing this, I actually had Dragon Ball Z playing in the background, specifically episodes involving Frieza. It added a nostalgic layer to the process. I remember as a kid/teen:
- Watching those episodes late at night
- Feeling like the Frieza battle lasted forever
Back then, you couldn’t just stream the next episode—you had to:
- Catch it at the exact time
- Or miss it completely
So working on this while listening to those scenes felt like a full-circle moment.
Convention Experience
This was the outfit I originally planned to wear to the convention before I was later encouraged to compete (which led to Sailor Goku). This look felt:
- Low pressure
- Comfortable
- And easy to move in
It allowed me to still participate in the environment without overextending myself.
Connection to the Character
One of the highlights of this experience was getting to meet voice actors from the series. In particular:
- Linda Young (the OG voice of Frieza)
That was especially meaningful because she’s the voice I remember from when I first watched the show. There were newer voice actors present as well, but hearing the original voice tied everything back to those early experiences.
Why This Cosplay Matters
This look represents something important: meeting yourself where you are. Not every cosplay needs to be:
- Elaborate
- Time-intensive
- Or competition-ready
Sometimes, it’s enough to:
- Show up
- Wear something themed
- And still feel connected to what you enjoy
Practical Takeaway
This is a great example of something I often recommend. If you’re going through a lot, try:
- A casual or gym-based cosplay
- Something comfortable
- Something reusable
That way:
- You still participate
- You still create
- But you don’t overwhelm yourself
And as a bonus, you now have an outfit you can wear again, even outside of cosplay.
Final Thoughts
Even though this wasn’t a full build, it’s one of those pieces that:
- Feels authentic
- Has personal meaning
- And actually gets used
It also reminded me that creativity doesn’t always have to be big to be impactful.
Costume Notes & Condition
All pieces are still part of my wardrobe:
- The athletic set is regularly wearable
- The shirt is still in use with slight paint fading over time
The paint did soften slightly, especially because it had a bit of shimmer; but overall, it still holds up and matches well. Every now and then, someone will still come up and say: “Awesome shirt.” And that alone makes it worth it.
