This one feels special, and honestly, it makes sense that it landed on number seven. There is just something about this cosplay that stands out, not only because of the character, but because of the experience that came with it. Like many people who grew up watching a different dub, I knew her as Serena. Later on, I learned her original name is Usagi Tsukino, but Serena is the name that always stuck with me. That alone already gives this cosplay a nostalgic layer.
Concept & Approach
What made this version different is that I did not go with her transformed Sailor Moon look. At conventions, most people choose:
- Full Sailor Scout transformation outfit
- Battle-ready versions of the character
But I noticed something was missing. You almost never see her in her everyday schoolgirl look. That is what made me want to do this version. It felt more grounded, more relatable, and honestly, a little more unique in a sea of transformation outfits.
Outfit Breakdown
The outfit itself was simple but effective.
- Bodycon-style leotard with snap closure
- Matching skirt layered on top
- Ankle socks
- Flats
The bodycon base was a great choice because it kept everything smooth and in place without constant adjusting. I also added a separate pin, which became one of my favorite little details. No matter how I moved, it would naturally shift and still face the correct direction, which made it feel very dynamic without needing constant fixing.
The Wig Challenge
The wig was easily the most difficult part of this cosplay. On paper, it seems straightforward, but in reality:
- It is extremely long
- The pigtails tangle constantly
- It is heavier than expected
- It sits on top of already thick natural hair
Even after straightening it, the tangling was still an issue. I tried thinning it, thinking that would help, but I ended up over-thinning it the first time. That wig became more of an experiment piece after that. When I repurchased it, I was much more careful. I had to remind myself that the pigtails are not full wigs, they are much more delicate, and you cannot treat them the same way. This is still something I am learning and refining. At some point, going to a professional wig shop for advice is probably the smartest move.
Contacts & Real-Life Adjustments
Originally, I planned to wear contacts. But that day, my eyes were not having it. This is one of those real-life cosplay moments that people do not always talk about. Sometimes your body just says no, and you have to adapt. So I skipped the contacts. And honestly, it did not take away from the cosplay at all. If anything, it was a reminder that comfort and safety always come first.
Accessories
One of my favorite props was the suitcase. I searched for one that matched hers as closely as possible, especially one with a small lock detail, but I could not find an exact match. Still, the one I found worked really well and became a staple accessory for this look. I still have it, and it has held up nicely over time.
Convention Experience
This cosplay got a really interesting reaction at conventions. A lot of people pointed out the same thing: They do not often see this version of Usagi. That alone made it feel worth it. It stood out in a subtle way, not because it was flashy, but because it was different. There was also a really fun group moment where multiple Sailor Moon characters gathered together. We tried to organize ourselves in order of character progression, which turned into a mix of teamwork and confusion. I ended up in the center because I was representing her earliest form, before all the transformations.
Community & Connections
This cosplay is tied to so many positive interactions. I met:
- Other Sailor Moon cosplayers who were incredibly kind
- The “K Sisters,” who were so thoughtful and even gave out little goodie bags
- An artist whose work I instantly fell in love with, and we still keep in touch
There is something about this fandom that brings out such warmth in people.
Beyond Conventions
This cosplay also extended beyond convention floors. I wore it during a cosplay talk at the Somerville Library in Massachusetts, which was a completely different kind of experience. Getting to speak alongside someone with more competition experience was both humbling and inspiring. It made me realize how much there is still to learn, and how many different paths exist within cosplay.
Current Condition
Over time, this cosplay evolved.
- Costume is still in good condition
- Flats are still owned and worn
- Tights and socks are regularly replaced as needed
- Wig was replaced after initial over-thinning
- Original wig is now more of a test piece
It is one of those cosplays that has grown with experience.

This is easily one of my favorite cosplays. Not just because of how it looks, but because of everything attached to it:
